Board Games the Sell Well on eBay

Here’s an item that I bet everyone reading has stored away in a closet or attic or basement long forgotten and just collecting dust.  I have several of these that I used to play with my wife and kids but got bored with.   And speaking of “bored” I’m talking about…Board Games.   :)

Some of these that you may have had as a kid or even as an adult could be worth a few bucks.   Here, in no particular order, are 10 that I see consistently selling well on eBay:

1. Avalon Hill Civilization Board Game — This game from the early 80’s is going for as much as $120.00 in good condition.  If you also have the follow-up Advanced Civilization game you can get as much as $200.00 for both in good condition.

Examples (note: you must be logged into your eBay account to view)

2. Aggravation Board Game by Lakeside Games — The early 70’s edition of this board game will bring $30 - $40 on eBay.

3. 40th Anniversary Risk — The 40th anniversary edition of this classic board game was released in 1999.  In new in the box condition this is selling for as much as $200.00.  Used condition will still bring as much as $100.00.

4. Diplomacy — Avalon Hill/Hasbro.  The Original version of Diplomacy was released in 1976 by Avalon Hill.  Avalon Hill released Deluxe Diplomacy in 1992 and Hasbro came out with a version called Diplomacy in 1999.  Any of these versions will bring as much as $100.00 and sometimes more depending on condition.

5. Acquire By Avalon Hill (1999 Version )  Are you starting to see a pattern here?  Just about anything from Avalon Hill seems to sell very well.

6. NFL Strategy Board Game — We talked about Tudor Electric Football Games in a different blog post but Tudor also produced this gem of a football based board game in 1987 called NFL Strategy.   This game will bring as much as $200.00 in good condition.

7. CashFlow 101 Rich Dad Poor Dad - based on the book Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.  This game sells retails for $195.00.  Gently Used Cashflow 101 games will bring $150.00 and up on eBay.

8. Original Skittle-Bowl by Aurora — this fun game from 1967-1970 is bringing as much as $80.00 on eBay.  As always completeness and condition are major factors in the final price.

9. Parker Brothers Masterpiece Classic Art Auction Board Game — the 1970s edition will bring up to $50.00.  The 1996 edition will bring up to $30.00.

10. Dark Tower electronic board game — this game by Milton Bradley was released in 1981 and brings over $200.00 on eBay.  The UK version will bring $300.00 or more.

I remember Masterpiece very well. Of course, I don’t remember which of my relatives owned it…

  4. outoftheattic2u - December 27th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

Oh well, I never heard of those games and don’t recall ever seeing them in my travels.
I have sold a few board games that were factory sealed but not at the prices I am seeing now.
Well I will just keep looking and hopefully will come across a winner.
Thanks much for your input into things to sell.

Great article, as always. The title needs a little tweaking, though, lol! I haven’t heard of many of the games, either, but I’ve printed the list to keep with me when garage sale season starts.

Hi, this is great! I have the RDPD Cashflow Game for kids that my son and his friends played once or twice. I just have to make sure all the pieces are there! Thanks so much for the tip.

    Best,
    Mary

  7. Paula - December 27th, 2007 at 4:34 pm

Wow I have a closet full of games, guess I should check them out. Was going to put them in spring garage sale for a buck a piece, I change my mind on that now.
    Thank You So Much

    DeCluttering Your Old Board Games…

Scott Foster, from Overlooked Treasure, has a number of ideas on how to use eBay to sell those items that are collecting dust in your home. Today he talked about a number of board games that sell quite well on…

  9. Nancy - December 27th, 2007 at 4:44 pm

We had several Aggravation games over the years. But they were all worn out. We never got bored with them and played a rather rough game of it. None of the games I stll have and don’t play any more are listed but it might be worth checking to see if they ar on eBay.

  10. Clancy Moon - December 27th, 2007 at 4:59 pm

    Scott, you’re O.K. (I don’t care what they say)
You have indeed uncovered some jewels…, At 72 years old I haven’t played them for a long time…, but..my wife stored a lot of board games in a box about thirty or thirty-five years ago.
Guess I’ll be doing digging in the attic.., I have no idea what kind of games they are after all this time.., but I’ll be finding out.
    Thanks Scott

  12. Hilary - December 27th, 2007 at 5:26 pm

EXCELLENT! Thanks so much for the info. I see many older board games at estate sales but wasn’t too sure which ones were in demand. The sad part is they usually go for a $1 or $2, so I think I just need to reach deep into my pockets and take a chance :-). Thanks again for the heads up Scott!

  13. Roxie - December 27th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

I have Risk, but not the anniversary edition. I love that you share your research with us.

  14. Wayne - December 27th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

Thanks for all your posts. I’m 73 and I’ve got some old games stored away somewhere (just have to find them). Between working part time and selling books and hundreds of old movie 8×10’s on eBay, I find it hard to find time to get some of my old stuff listed. But, I’ll keep at it. Thanks again for your work. Wayne

  15. Larry Says: - December 27th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

  17. Barbara - December 27th, 2007 at 6:23 pm

Oh Darn, I gave away Dark Tower 2 weeks ago for $1. It was to a 10 year old so I don’t feel to bad.

Thank you so much Steve. I know how time consuming your research is and have made some sales because of It!

  18. Bill - December 27th, 2007 at 6:25 pm

I don’t beleive that I have ever seen any gift baskets that look any better for the money.

  19. Bill - December 27th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

I don’t beleive that I have ever seen any gift baskets that look any better, these baskets are just the thing for any ocassion. And you sure can’t beet the price.

  20. Joe - December 27th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

How about Monopoly by Parker Bros with the Wooden playing pieces? Would that be another one? Thanks for the info.

  21. Cheri Mello - December 27th, 2007 at 6:39 pm

Thanks for the insight,I don’t have any of the above mentioned, but i will look more closely at what I do have, who knew…..

  22. Gerry - December 27th, 2007 at 6:43 pm

Great job on the games. But I wish you much luck finding most of these games. Most of these games are considered hard core gamers games. The Avlon Hill games and the dark tower, civilization are extremely hard to find, that is why the prices are the way they are on Ebay. Abother real good one for you, if you can find it, would be Titan by avalon hill. Happy hunting.

  23. webCHOPPERS - December 27th, 2007 at 6:50 pm

I have some of those board games, and in great condition. EBAY,here they come. Thanks for the tip and keep those tips coming. webCHOPPERS.

  28. Dawn - December 27th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

My husband has a great eye for finding games and toys and we have sold many over the past couple years. I know we have Masterpiece in our game collection - I think we’ll dig it out, play it with the kids and then see if it’s the version that’s worth selling! lol Thanks for the treasures!

  29. andrew wong - December 28th, 2007 at 1:19 am

Excellent, always wait your next info. thanks.

  30. Rosey - December 28th, 2007 at 2:40 am

  31. Liz - December 28th, 2007 at 8:04 am

I sold a mess of my collection of Monopoly games…got descent money for them…and a couple of movie board games…but I never thought of these. thanks

  32. Melinda - December 28th, 2007 at 9:50 am

Great info on specific board games. I’ve had great success selling old board games, electronic games & toys this past year on ebay. I now tell other sellers that toys and vintage home decor are the 2 things that sell all year long.

  33. Bettie - December 28th, 2007 at 10:08 am

Thanks for the tip. My games are well worn as we are a play games family unit. Will be looking for these as I go to flea markets and garage sales.

  34. Jewel - December 28th, 2007 at 1:49 pm

Thanks for the reminder! I found the same completed auctions a few months ago when I was browsing completed games. I was curious as to what was selling and for how much since I’ve sold some Fisher Price kiddy games for decent $$. Now if I could only find some of these golden goodies :)

  35. MaryBeth - December 28th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

Don’t forget Mystery Date Game from the 1960s and 1970s. I sold my sister’s game and made $65.00. The lid wasn’t perfect as all four corners had split apart but all the pieces were there and the door to the mystery guy worked. This game in mint condition could bring about $120.

  36. Brenda - December 28th, 2007 at 7:29 pm

Thanks, I have Dark Tower, I remember how excited I was when I bought it new and had a blast playing with the kids. Now, like everyone else, where in the attic is it?

  37. Bill - December 29th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

Well I’ll be !! Four Risk games in the closet upstairs and none of them are the right one! Thanks for the info though.

  38. Jerry - December 29th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

Ya Hoo! I’ve got the NFL Stratagy game somewhere in the attic!

  39. Dale - December 30th, 2007 at 9:35 am

Since a teenager I had all the Avalon games but I still won’t sell as I believe within a few years they will become impossible to obtain. I enjoy playing them now with my kids. Good articles and this is the main thing I first look for at yard sales is older games.

  40. Donna - December 30th, 2007 at 12:25 pm

Too funny, I have a old Mash Trivia game in the goodwill box. Guess it’s going on Ebay now!!!

  41. John R. Cumbow - December 30th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

I think my “little” sister (now 52 years old) has our old Masterpiece game. I’ll have to ask next time I see her.

And I’ll be watching for those Avalon Hill games at the thrift stores and yard sales.

Keep up the helpful tips. Thanks!
