Hi folks, Scott here.
I’ve been so busy this week I haven’t had time to do the research for a blog post so I asked my good friend Dennis Murphy to write this week’s post.
Dennis (or as I call him, EzD) averages $5000.00 a month part-time from his eBay business. He’s able to do this because he sells products people want and are actively searching for so he has an extremely high sell through rate. (He does better part-time then most eBayers who work 50+ hours a week)
Anyway, he knows his stuff.
EzD, the blog is yours…
Thanks Scott, I’m thrilled that you asked me to share my thoughts with your readers.
I want to talk about the difference between selling hot products and selling products to markets of people.
Hot products tend to have a very short life span and are very competitive. Yes, if you get in early enough you can make some quick money but it’s really not a good business model for a long term profitable business. You see, most of the products I sell I have been selling for years. What I look for are markets that have a specific need — a need that isn’t going to go away tomorrow or next month when the hot product suddenly becomes yesterday’s news.
So, you want to look for markets of people who have a need or desire or problem and then figure out what you can sell to them to solve their problem or fill their desire.
Let me show you something I ran into the other day. Now, this isn’t one of my products but it’s a great example of what I’m talking about. Check out this auction:
1997-to-2004-CHEVY-VENTURE-programming-instructions
You know the keyless entry remotes that open your car or truck? Well, most people don’t know this but on many models of cars and trucks you can program or reprogram them yourself. This is handy info to have because if you lose one (or it gets stolen) you don’t want someone to be able to open your vehicle. Or, maybe you bought a used keyless entry remote off craigslist (the dealers charge about $275 for a new one but you can usually find one used for $30 or $40 bucks) and you need to program it.
SO, this is a nice little niche market of people who need specific programming instructions. It’s not what you would call a “hot” product but it’s something that if you need it you need it now. And what’s really great about this is it’s delivered electronically so you can set the whole thing up on auto-pilot.
Now, you’re not going to get rich selling $6.00 items but if you look at the History link for the product above you will see how many this one auction sold:
http://offer.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBidsLogin&item=7956237321
That’s over a long period of time but he has dozens of these auctions running all the time. He also sells the Keyless Remotes themselves as well as batteries and other accessories someone would need to go along with their keyless remotes.
Imagine that: A whole business that’s just selling products having to do with keyless entry remotes. Who would have thunk it?
Interested in going into the keyless remote programming selling business? A search in Google turns up the programming instructions for some models of vehicles:
And some vehicle owner’s manuals also give you the instructions.
Thanks for reading and, Scott, thanks again for letting me invade your blog.
EzD siging off…
P.S. How about a local service for people in your area who have lost their remote and need to get it replaced but don’t want to pay the dealer $275.00 for a new one? Just a thought.
